This video is about a spiritual leader named Abhay Charanarenvind Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, also known as Srila Prabhupada. The video chronicles his life and the Hare Krishna movement he founded.
Srila Prabhupada was born in Calcutta, India in 1896. Raised in a devout family, he showed an interest in Krishna from a young age. In his youth, he became involved with Mahatma Gandhi’s movement for Indian independence. However, a meeting with Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati, a leading Gaudiya Vaishnava spiritual leader, convinced Srila Prabhupada that his true calling was to spread Krishna consciousness around the world.
After becoming a disciple of Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati, Srila Prabhupada received the renounced order of sannyasa and the name Abhay Charanarenvind Bhaktivedanta Swami. He spent many years studying Gaudiya Vaishnava scriptures and philosophy. In 1944, he began publishing a magazine called Back to Godhead.
In 1965, at the age of 69, Srila Prabhupada traveled to America with the mission of spreading Krishna consciousness in the West. He arrived in New York City with very little money and possessions, but he was undeterred. He soon began attracting followers, and within a few years, he had established temples in major cities around the world.
The Hare Krishna movement, also known as ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness), is based on the teachings of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, a 16th-century saint from Bengal. Devotees in the Hare Krishna movement chant the Hare Krishna mantra, worship Krishna as the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and strive to live a simple and pure life.
Srila Prabhupada translated and published many important Gaudiya Vaishnava scriptures, including the Bhagavad-gita and the Srimad Bhagavatam. He is credited with introducing Gaudiya Vaishnava philosophy to the Western world.
Srila Prabhupada passed away in 1977, but his legacy continues to live on. The Hare Krishna movement is now a global organization with millions of followers.
